New Years Resolutions Don’t Work: Two strategies to do instead
New Years Resolutions have only an 8% “success” rate.
So that’s a 92% chance that you won’t make it through the year with your commitment. Not great stats.
My friend Meghan O’Malley posted this meme. Truth!
So, if you feel inspired to create new habits, to improve your life in the new year, what do you do?
One alternative to a New Year’s Resolution is to set a powerful intention. Instead of focusing on what you want to do, make it something you want to embrace, own, become, embody, radiate.
Intention setting is a powerful practice. So powerful, I ask clients at the beginning of every session what their intention is for our time together.
My intention for 2022 is “sustainability.” I’m learning how to work more than I did during the pandemic and to create more value without recreating the old habit of burnout in my life. It’s a constant practice of tuning in with myself.
I just rescheduled 2 programs I’m teaching soon because I was trying to do too much too fast.
In 2022, what do you intend to cultivate or create more of?
How can you anchor your intention? Put the word or statement in your calendar as a reminder on repeat. Make art representing your intention. Put a post-it note in a prominent place.
Another alternative to resolutions is evolving your habits. Because, let’s face it, intense cold-turkey changes rarely stick.
Evolving your habits isn’t as easy as it sounds. Luckily, we can learn new ways to do it.
Two years ago, an amazing client introduced me to concepts from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. I was immediately blown away because they resonated with my years of experience supporting people to evolve habits as a coach.
I devoured podcasts interviewing him and found new ones this year with Brene’ Brown. Yet, I never got the book.
Until now.
I’m ready to read the book and apply it to my life and bring it to my clients. (I’ve already started!)
This book has sold over 5 million copies for good reason.
For example, if you want to get in shape, instead of giving you something intense to do, like running a marathon, it helps you create consistency. It may not sound as sexy, but small habits add up and last longer.
If you want an effective way to EVOLVE habits…then consider joining me in reading the best-selling book, Atomic Habits.
